TriMet loves… Nazis? Someone apparently thinks so

Was alerted to this discussion by TriMetiquette reader Bjorn Warloe (used the handy-dandy contact form) -

“hey, so it isn’t my story, but some guy is whining over on indymedia about getting tossed off a bus for telling someone to shut the f*** up. I say hurrah for a bus driver willing to tell someone to get off the bus for trying to pick a fight with another rider even if he was a skinhead.”

The discussion about this is going on over at Indymedia. My thoughts about this story is this: the bus driver just needed to deescalate the situation. Unfortunately, as the story puts it, the wrong person was asked to get off the bus. But someone did need to leave the bus to stop anything from happening.

I disagree, two people were admittantly confronting one rider based on the clothing that person was wearing. The bus driver has a responsibility to ensure the safety of everyone riding the bus. If the driver did nothing a fight could have occured on the bus, and certainly continued intimidation of a rider would have occured. If he had put the Nazi off the bus the other two riders could have gotten off and assaulted him. Putting the instigator off the bus was the only way to make sure all riders were safe. I’m not a fan of Nazi’s either but people should be able to ride the bus without being attacked regardless of what they are wearing. I’ve been on a bus before where people were behaving in a threatening manner and I am glad to see drivers who don’t allow it.

The right thing to do would have been to kick off the instigators. It sounds like that is what happened. One should really complain.

One shouldn’t really complain… is what I thought I typed.
