TriMet bringing sexy back with new trains this Thursday

Indeed, TriMet is bringing “sexy back” by unleashing six of the 22 new Type 4 MAX trains into regular service.  You’ve no doubt seen those big, beautiful trains running test runs on the tracks.  Well, I’m here to tell you that you might be riding on one of those bad boys this Thursday, August 6.

Joseph Rose has the ‘deets on the new train type:

“Compared to the typical Type 3 MAX trains, the Type 4 offers four more seats per vehicle for a total of 136 seats per two-car train. It also has a little more standing room with a design capacity of 344 for a two-car train, compared to 332 for the existing Type 3 trains.”

Roomier too?  Sounds very nice!

More standing room - always a plus!

Big plus for fat @$$ people.

now we just need to get some of them to shower, it can get ripe in there!!!

I hope I can catch a ride. It would make a nice b-day treat, indeed!

“Roomier” is a bit of a stretch - for standing room, sure, but the seats are tiny! It’ll be interesting to see how it all works out, but some of those seats will be best suited for children or small people.

Have to agree with J - some of the seats on the Type IV were a joke in terms of legroom (they looked like they were 18″ from a wall). But cool things about the type IVs:

- You can now look into the cab, and see what the driver sees.
- The “parlors” on the two ends in the middle of the consist. You can see from one train into the other (and see the track in-between)
- There is no longer a “don’t stand here” spot near the door — the ramp can deploy even if you’re standing there.
- Cool new signs
- Cool new look
- Supposedly smoother ride

Not-cool:
It seems like there’s now a big gap between the platform and the train. Easily possible for you misstep and jam your foot into there. Watch out! (Follow the link in my name for a picture).

Thanks for the comments, all. Also, thanks for the picture, TQ Max! WOW - that is quite a little gap..

Is there a schedule for these trains so I can try to get on one to or from work? How is the wheelchair spaces differ from other trains? Are the wheelchair buttons in better spots to press? I wish there was somewhere to see more pictures!

Hopefully people won’t continue to be rude and put their feet up on the seats! The new trains have more seats facing each other which isn’t good if you don’t want a seat with dirt all over it.
