The ‘inbetweener’ seater

We’ve all seen it before, either on the bus or MAX: the ‘inbetweener’

sitting inbetween two seats

Couple of thoughts ran through my mind when I saw this:

  • Why does this person think they should be able to occupy two seats?
  • If you’re riding public transportation, you really shouldn’t be afraid of accidentally touching other people

Unfortunately, the ‘inbetweener’ happens on a daily basis. What can be done to combat this practice? Unfortunately, not much…

Edit - several comments have been made pointing out that this instance of an inbetweener seater is actually warranted.  Perhaps this image was a bad example.  On this particular instance, the MAX was pretty packed with everyone crowding near the door.  I fortunately had made it through there and positioned myself in the middle of the train.

The point I’m trying to make is - in MANY circumstances, this is a little problem.  This instance, however, as you all have pointed out, was probably an OK time to go about taking up two seats due to the passengers sitting next to the individual.

Thanks to those commenting; love the added perspective.

The photo illustrates a second issue, the “Bigger Than 1 Seat” rider — which often leads to The Inbetweener.

Since it’s unlikely TriMet’s going to start charging 2 tickets if you’re wider than a seat, I think we’re stuck with Inbetweeners.

I get what you are saying, but in this photo, the lady on the left is taking up more than her fair share. So in this case the middle person could sit next to the person on the right, but no one could take up the other seat. In reality, the person in the middle is being polite and giving everyone a little space.

Easy solution to this one, just say excuse me and sit down in whichever side of the two seats seems to have more space.

Yeah, the problem here is the morbidly obese woman who is spilling over into another seat, not the woman who is ‘inbetweening’. Even if she moved fully to the set on her left, there would be no room for another person to sit to her right.

I agree. Why are you posting a picture and blaming an innocent girl as doing something wrong. Even if she sat in her own seat, the obese lady would still prevent anyone from sitting there. As someone said already the “inbetween girl” is actually the considerate one. I request an edit to your post.

I’m with Aaron on this one. The girl is just using the remnants of the seat, isn’t like anyone else could fit anyway.
