I say let em ride free at 6pm!

Yeah, I mean, 8 is great and all… but I don’t know about you, but I like to “get the party sta-r-ted” at a much earlier hour.

6 sounds good. 8? That’s fine… I GUESS :)

This topic got me wondering if it’s possible to be a serious downtown club-goer the rest of the year and rely solely on TriMet. I came up with 10 bus and rail lines that operate after 1:20 AM on Friday and Saturday nights, and ranked them by average lateneness (of course the Friday times apply to the other weeknights as well):

1) 20-Burnside/Stark. The night-owl champ is the 1:52 AM weeknight run from W Burnside & 4th to Gresham TC. Also leaves westbound from the same area to Sunset TC around 1:40 AM.

2) 58-Canyon Rd. The biggest surprise — I never thought of this secondary route from downtown to Beaverton as one of the major lines, but there it is leaving SW Jefferson & 5th at 1:38 AM on Fri & Sat nights.

3) 14-Hawthorne. An obvious choice for late-night service. Serves the hip Hawthorne stretch, then out Foster Rd past sleazy 82nd Ave and the infamous “Felony Flats” region to SE 94th.

4) 15-NW 23rd Ave. Logically ends at Montgomery Park at this hour. (I assume most of those rich folks up Thurman near Forest Park have cars anyway)

5) 9-Powell. Unfortunately doesn’t go beyond Powell & 98th at this time. (I learned that the hard way one night)

6) 19-Glisan. Serves it’s full run all the way to Gateway TC.

7) 8-NE 15th Ave. Another winner: Downtown to the Kenton area.

8) 12-Sandy. Regrettably ends at Parkrose/Sumner TC. This reminds me what lousy nighttime service the Fairview-Troutdale area has (the last 12 leaves downtown for there at 10:32 PM, the 77 even earlier).

9) 4-Fessenden. Not the fastest or most direct route from downtown to St Johns, but defintely the latest at 1:31 AM.

10) Blue Max. Using the Pioneer Courthouse Square stations as the starting point, runs east to Ruby Junction/E 197th Ave and west to Elmonica/SW 170th Ave between 1:20 and 1:32 AM. Why not take some more impaired drivers off the road and run them all the way to Gresham and Hillsboro at this hour?

In summary, if you live within walking distance of these runs you won’t be closing the downtown bars, but you should be able to stay until approximately 1 AM and still make it home via TriMet. Any corrections or additions?
