The Honululu, Hawaii city council is considering a bill that will make it illegal for public transportation riders with “odors that unreasonably disturb others or interfere with their use of the transit system” to ride. The bill proposes that if someone with an offensive smell does ride, that person…
“… may be ordered to leave transit property and issued a summons or citation by a police officer. If convicted, a person could be fined up to $500, spend up to six months in jail, or be both fined and jailed.”
Jail time for an offensive odor?! Wow.

Bob over at Portland Transport (one of the best Portland public transportation blogs out there) gave me a heads up of a new documentary that Matt Davis from the Portland Mercury and himself made about this ongoing MAX ticket machine problem. The Portland Mercury Blogtown post with the video is here, along with some commentary from Matt himself.
Bob contacted Mary Fetsch, TriMet’s Spokesperson, asking if the ticket machine situation has improved and linked her to the video.
You can go to the Portland Mercury Blogtown page to view the video or watch it below:
Keep an eye out on the Portland Mercury page to see if Mary indeed does respond to the video. Kudos to Bob Richardson of Portland Transport and Matt Davis from the Merc – great video guys!
WES (Westside Express Service) is making long-awaited maiden voyage on February 2. I was hoping to be chosen in the “WES Time” Essay Contest, to be one of 30 lucky riders to ride WES on that date, but alas was not chosen.
So I was hoping a TriMetiquette reader was chosen or perhaps will be riding WES that day to snap some pictures and tell us how the WES is.
Anyone interested?
Wish I could be invited… *nudge nudge TriMet higher-ups*
The “Global No Pants Subway Ride Portland” Event is happening this Saturday, January 10th. Expect some pantless riders between 3 – 6pm on the MAX and buses.
Heard about this event on OregonLive. You can RSVP or read more event details on the Portland Facebook page.
Me? Eh. I don’t think my wife will appreciate me riding pantless on the MAX
