If you’re taking public transportation in Portland on New Years Eve, here’s the 2008 TriMet public transportation New Years Eve schedule that I wrote earlier this month. Note: free TriMet fare! So if in doubt, please do take the MAX / bus / streetcar if you’re drinking and don’t have a designated driver. Stay safe!
Here are some good posts or places to look for good posts for Portland New Years Eve events:
I’ll update this post with any New Years Even events or comprehensive blog posts I see the next couple of days.
Want to wish you all a very merry Christmas. For those that need to use TriMet to get out and about this Christmas day, here’s the latest info on service:
TransitTracker may not be able to predict arrival times. However, for some bus lines, it will report how far away your bus is.
On this snowy December day, a couple of things to remember if you’re taking TriMet to / from work or for play:
Take a look at the TriMet Riding Etiquette section (TriMetiquette) for some tips on how to ride. Be nice to fellow passengers and remember: it’s cold, it’s snowy and icy, but everyone riding is in “this” together. So please be pleasant and nice on this nasty morning commute.
And please do remember: bus stops and MAX platforms are smoke free. There are signs posted and TriMet / transit officials should be issuing tickets for anyone smoking on these but stops and platforms. Mind where you’re smoking.
Planning on taking the MAX, bus or streetcar on Dec. 31 or to any Portland New Years Eve parties and events? Here’s the information you need to know.
New Years Eve
First, there is free TriMet fare from 8 p.m. til service ends on New Years Eve. This is for the MAX, bus or streetcar service.

Added eastbound trains will leave Hillsboro’s Hatfield Government Center Station at 12:47 and 1:10 a.m. Added westbound trains will leave Gresham’s Cleveland Station at 12:56, 1:11 and 2:11 a.m.

Yellow Line – Late-night service is added to the Yellow line schedule as well. MAX Yellow Line trains traveling to Expo Center will leave Portland City Center every 15 minutes until 1:30 a.m., and then every 30 minutes between 1:30 and 2 a.m. At 3 a.m. a final train will leave Pioneer Courthouse Square. Added trains to City Center will leave Expo Center Station every 15 minutes until 1:15 a.m., with the last trains to Portland City Center leaving at 1:45 and 2:05 a.m.
Trimet Bus Service
There will be no additional bus service on New Years Eve day – the buses will be on regular weekday schedules.
Portland Streetcar
The Streetcar will be running on the regular weekday schedule.
Have a couple of service alerts for you this Monday morning:
Three bus lines canceled:
All buses are chained up. Reminder: buses with chains operate at a maximum 25 mph and will not run on a regular schedule. For Frequent Service lines, service is expected to run about every 20-25 minutes; riders on other lines should expect buses about every 30 minutes.MAX service is running fairly smoothly with only some occasional hiccups.
I would say that MAX times are much more reliable than bus today, if you have a choice as to which TriMet service to use.
LIFT will provide life-sustaining trips only.
